Summary of this project

Image
This project was fast paced and also challenging. It was fun because we got to create our own stylized poppies, and the poppy flower is very iconic. Through doing this project not only were we representing, our client and ourselves but we were also representing remembrance day which was huge pressure in my eyes. Something so big was put on our shoulders, I felt I handled this well, keeping my work professional, stylised and eye-catching. I also felt I met my client's requirements during this brief. I had a simple yet eye catching design, the symbolised a lot of different meanings, the hands represent each identity of a fallen solider. Which I felt had a lot of meaning and sentimental value to certain people. Overall I handled the project well and thoroughly enjoyed it. Here is a Birdseye view of our sprayed-painted illustrations, this was to make it look like a field of poppies, at the end of the video we all held up a huge poppy to the sky, to again, make it look like a f...

Deadline Day - Creating poppies

Image
Today was the day the event, we spent roughly 3/4 hours creating our designs, and spend a little time as to where we should create them. We had some time to decide on where we wanted to position our poppies, I decided to position mine to where it obvious. As the public would walk to the skating ring, my design would be directly in their view. It may have been sunny but I thought that if the design was placed in an obvious spot then it would be more visible for the public to see. I wanted to create something that was iconic for remembrance day, whilst creating my design I thought about adding some extra poppies that stuck with my original designs, but presented new features. I created 'ombre poppies' these poppies gave it more of a colourful and contemporary feel to my design. I used the original template for my design, and only sprayed the tips giving it this effect. I feel like this design worked well amongst my original ones, because it wasn't changed to the p...

Experimenting and Finalizing my design

Image
These annotated pages explain what I'm going to be using within my design. The annotated page on the left explains what kind of leaves I'm going to be using for my final illustration. The page on the right explains my thought process and explanation to creating the centre of my poppy. The annotated page on the right explains what kind of stencils I used and what I worked with whilst practising my design, to finalise it and make sure the design was of high standard, worked effectively and was fitting to the brief. The image on the right was stencil I used to practise my final design with. I used a sheet of A3 paper, cut a small window underneath (so the stencil wouldn't move) and sprayed my design. This worked effectively as shown in the images below.

Ideas and Further Progress

Image
We had a group discussion on what we should do for our final idea, I made 2 improvement pages as to where I want to take this project. My best idea was to use the handprint poppies. My tutor also really liked this idea, he said it would work effective if I used my hand and sprayed over it for a negative effect, as well as creating a stencil to create a positive design. Although I did some other experimenting within my sketchbook. The idea of using my hands to create the poppies made me think about the different ways I could create a poppy using my hands. I created a peace poppy so the meaning was clear and it also suited to what I wanted to do within this project, I decided to not use this design, because the peace symbol can represent many different meanings, so I decided not to use this design. I created smudge poppies because I thought it would look disorientated to the point where it would be unrecognisable but still be able to tell by the colours what the illustrati...

The Idea and Research

Image
I took to pinterest to look into more depth and further detail of a poppy is formed. Link to my pinterest is here I created a mind map of what our clients want and what I thought would be effective within this project. My first idea was to create a poppy and whilst still keeping the same outline of the flower itself, the only thing I would've changed would be the colour. I wanted my design to be simple and not too complicated, so I chose bright colours, one because colour fills the atmosphere with positivity and another reason being that there are children, and they love to use colour. I sketched some rough designs to see how they'd look. I used watercolours on paper to see how the colours looked, but I realised we cant used any type of paint due to the surroundings of where we are creating our art. As for the colour scheme I thought that using complimentary colours that fit in what I've been doing within some of my projects, whilst also keeping the ...

Meeting our clients

Image
Today we met with our clients for the current project we're working on, they informed about what space we can use and what materials we can use, so the floor isn't stained by our work permanently. They showed the areas that are available to decorate because although we are prepping for the event, the space is still open to the public. We were told that maybe our 'helpers' weren't coming anymore, depending on if the school thinks that the week isn't too busy. We also have a huge amount of space to cover, so deciding who has what area shouldn't be a problem. They gave us details to their Facebook Page. Our client said it was up to us what we create, we can re-create the design. We had to consider the weather, they also explained how there will be VIPs there and that all of Hereford City Council will be there. Our clients are trying to get the message across that a veteran can aged from 19-60, it doesn't matter how old they are, they still deserve rec...

Briefing for new project

Image
We were briefed on a project that was associated with Remembrance Day (Poppy Day.) The event was going to be held at the Skatepark in Hereford, with a vast majority of people coming. We were told to be creative and that we can stylise our poppies to however we'd like to as long as it still fits the theme of 'Remembrance Day.'' We were also told that we may have helpers at hand, children will be invited to the event and may possibly help us with creating our designs. Our clients also mentioned that they would have a drone to capture our images from a birds eye view, so through these  designs I had to think carefully about my composition of my illustrations. We had a complicated brief given to us, although it sounds simple, we had to make sure nothing was PERMANENT because although the event is huge, it is still a public space used regularly. We came to the conclusion to use chalks to create our designs (our designs will be drawn on the floors.) Considering this ...
